Marion Frances Szurek, 84, passed on to the loving arms of our Lord on October 9, 2017 in Tampa, Florida. Mrs. Szurek was born Marion Frances Ettie in Miami, Florida on June 27, 1933, attended the University of Miami (where she was 1953 Orange Bowl Queen and 1954 Florida Citrus Queen), and married Lt. Anthony Szurek, USAF, in 1956. She spent many years living in several states and in Germany supporting her husband, who retired as a Lt. Colonel in San Angelo, Texas in 1977 following his final station of duty at Goodfellow Air Force Base (Lt. Colonel Szurek passed away in 1987). Following the passing of Lt. Colonel Szurek, Marion was married to Edward Bottomley, from Leeds, England (1989-1993). Mrs. Szurek eventually moved to Wesley Chapel, Florida in 2004 in order to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Szurek was preceded in death by her parents Horace and Mary Ettie, son Mark Anthony Szurek of Severn, MD, son James Allen Szurek of San Angelo, TX, and Grandson John Thomas Szurek. She is survived by her sister Patricia Rusk of Keswick, VA, and brother Gordon Ettie of Miami, FL, children and spouses John Andrew Szurek of Denver, CO, Paul Edward and Tish Szurek of Denver, CO, Mary Katherine and Stephen Glass of Wesley Chapel, FL, and Antonia Jan and Stephen Gilbride of Alexandria, VA. In addition, Marion was the proud Grandmother to Anthony, Sarah, and Dylan Szurek, Paul, Walker and Ben Szurek, Jeremy and Bailey Glass, and Gregory and Trevor Gilbride. She was Great Grandmother to Adalynn Szurek, Jace Szurek and Mylie Wheeler. Marion was an amazing and accomplished person who served as the Executive Director of the San Angelo Texas Convention and Visitors Bureau for many years, where one of her greatest accomplishments was contributing to the San Angelo “River Walk” improvement project. Mrs. Szurek also served as chairwoman of the Texas State Tourism Association, served as the head of the TTIA for three years, and was a member of the Texas Economic Development Commission. Her biggest joy in life was her children and family. She was loved by so many and will be missed by all. Rosary service will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 at Johnson's Funeral Home at 7p.m with family visitation immediately following until 9:00pm . Funeral services will be held at the Holy Angels Catholic Church in San Angelo,Texas on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 10:00 with burial immediately following at Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with a post-graveside reception from noon to 2:00 at Miss Hattie's restaurant, downtown located at 26 East Concho Ave, San Angelo, TX 76903 . In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Catholic Outreach Program at Holy Angles Catholic Church.
