Joseph "Joe" Kyle Sheldon, 81, was called home to our Lord and Savior on Sept 16, 2021. Joe spent his final days surrounded by family and numerous friends. Joseph was born October 24, 1939 in Modesto, California to Howard Sheldon Sr. and Elna Anderson. Joe attended Lincoln High School graduating in 1957. After scoring in the top 1%, he joined the Air Force in 1957 and was placed in the Air Force Security Services, serving 20 years. He was stationed in the US, Korea, Japan, Okinawa, Greece, Germany, finally retiring at Goodfellow AFB in 1978 and making San Angelo his final home. He attended Angelo State University and received a BS in Computer Science. Joe joined Verizon (formerly GTE) where he was a Computer Systems Analyst and retired in 2003. He also taught classes at Angelo State University. Joe met Darylene Pate in 1968 during a Judo class. They were married a short time later, February 14, 1969 in San Angelo. He was blessed with four children, Lynn, Darren, Jody and Joi. Joe is preceded in death by father Howard, mother Elna, Brother Howard, Jr., father and mother-in-law Gerald and Lelia Pate and brother-in-law Robert Price. He is survived by his loving wife Darylene Sheldon, brother and sister-in-law Bill and Nancy Sheldon, daughter Lynn Sheldon McAllister and husband Ken, son Darren Sheldon and wife Jennifer, son Jody Sheldon, and daughter Joi Sheldon Alls. He is also survived by his grandchildren Levi and Elizabeth Calhoun, Jordan Marecek, Ashley, Jack, Alex, Noel and Jackie Sheldon, Madison and Landree Alls, and great-grandchildren Jemma and Dean Calhoun. He also is survived by sister-in laws Cherylene Price, Deborah Boatright and husband Calvin, Chandra Harris and husband Glenn, brother-in-law Myron Pate and wife Mary Ellen, and Aunt Leona Anderson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Joe helped found the San Angelo Soccer Association and later served on the board. He spent his time coaching soccer and softball, making furniture, fixing everything around the house, teaching and spending time with friends and family. He was never without a book and a pocket knife. During his military career, Joe received numerous Air Force service awards, too many to list. He also earned a 3rd degree Black Belt in Judo.
The family would like to thank Dr. Cheruku (who saluted Joe during his final visit), Dr. Nussey, the staff at Methodist and Shannon Hospitals, Kindred Hospice and Kindred at Home for taking care of Joe in the past year and his final days. The love and compassion shown by all has made his transition easier for him and his family.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 21st from 6-8 pm at Johnson’s Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 22nd, First United Methodist Church Celebration Hall in San Angelo and a family graveside service at Lawnhaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a memorial donation to MD Anderson or Kindred Hospice of San Angelo.
