Our Dad was born on May 23rd to the late George Washington White and Texas Tennessee Vincent in Harrisburg, Arkansas. Homer married Evelyn Jones on June 25, 1948 in Pascagoula, MS. They loved each other every day for over 63 years . They made their home together in Moss Point, MS, for over 43 years before relocating to San Angelo, TX in 2000.
Dad was a gifted guitar player and singer. He never read music but could play any song he ever heard. He played on several gospel albums and he and mom sang on a weekly radio show in Memphis in 1956. He even played with Elvis. His friend Bill Black who was Elvis’ bass player tried to get dad to go on the road with the band and play guitar. He refused to leave the love of his life and never regretted it. Some of our fondest memories were jam sessions that would last for hours. Daddy and his friends Blackie, Junior and Milton would sing every song they knew, country and gospel and even a little rock- a- billy. He played for several church bands and could always be counted on to make everyone sound great.
Homer was a master mason , there was little he couldn’t do with brick and tile. We were the only family in the neighborhood with an artificial brick and tile fireplace with a built-in aquarium. His bar-b-que pit and patio were the envy of the street. His last masterpiece was an altar that he built with specifications given to him by God. From that altar he has prayed for his country, family and anyone who requested prayer.
In 1985, he retired as a Corning Supervisor after 25 years. After Corning, his good friend and neighbor Coach Berry asked dad to come fix the custodial services at the Moss Point School System. He retired as the District Custodial Supervisor in 1995.
Dad added the computer to his list of hobbies. He met many new friends on the computer! He could find some of the funniest and touching stories. He never tried to be politically correct. He always enjoyed a lively political discussing and has set many people straight about religion and about having a real relationship with Jesus.
His greatest joy was his family. He was so proud of his children and he loved playing with his grandkids and great grandkids. To them, he was PopPop and he was their biggest fan. With family and friends around he loved tell his funny stories. So funny in fact, he would often get so tickled at his own story and that he may not be able to finish them for laughing so hard. You could sit for hours listening to his life experiences. He was quite the poet and even wrote a book about his life called “A Flogging Rooster, Half-Moon Holes and Whitewash Paint”. He spent this last year deep in prayer and studying the Bible. He wrote prayers and memorized them daily. He always said his family and friends were favor from God. He believed that a man would be known by his fruit. The final thing he wrote in his journal was “Fruits of the Spirit; Love, Joy, Peace, Long Suffering, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.” These characteristics are the evidence of a life that loved and lived for Jesus. That was Homer White.
