Charlotte Ann Martin Jackson, our beautiful & elegant mother, passed peacefully on Saturday, November 20th, 2021, surrounded in her home by family & friends. Otherwise healthy for 91 years of age, she bravely endured the decline brought on by dementia. While our hearts are broken & the thought of life without the matriarch of our family is overwhelming, we take heart in knowing she has left behind the legacy of a strong, loving family that she will continue to watch over.
Born March 23, 1930, to William A. & Rose Cox Martin, Charlotte attended San Angelo schools, graduating in 1947. She married Elward G. Jackson of Lamesa, TX, November 9, 1947, in the First Christian Church of San Angelo.
In 1952, they moved from Lamesa to San Angelo to established Jacksons. Among the first merchants opening in The Village Shopping Center, they expanded five times to a final 8,000 sq. ft. department store. In 1983 after 31 years, they retired from retail with the business continued by daughter, Shireen. Entrepreneurs at heart, they also owned residential & commercial lease properties. In the early 1970’s Charlotte & Elward purchased the Meads Fine Bread Bakery building, dividing it into retail, office & warehouse spaces, now Jackson Square Business Center.
Charlotte expressed her gratitude many times for the life she lived. She & her husband of 43 years loved their acreage on Spring Creek where they built a home, raised their daughters & enjoyed the country life with a few horses, some of which raced on Texas tracks. She was adventurous & loved to travel. In earlier years, great memories remain of caravan trailer trips across the USA, Canada & even into the interior of Mexico, as well as traveling internationally with friends. She loved cruises & tours, planning several memorable vacations with her daughters. Dancing, playing games & bridge were among her favorite activities. Family times at her second home in Leakey, TX, brought her great joy. Charlotte was a collector throughout her life of things fine & beautiful from antique furniture to crystal & art. Fashion was her business & passion, exhibited each time she faced the public & remembered wherever she went by her beautiful clothing, jewelry & turbans, impeccable make up & eyelashes, as well as her fun loving personality. She was generous with family & favorite causes.
Charlotte is survived by her daughter, Shireen Jackson & husband Tom Woodard, grandson Jory Rector & wife Jodi Rector, great grandson Jaden Rector & wife Lindsey, & granddaughter “TJ” Teri Woodard, all of San Angelo. She is also survived by daughter Betty Fidler Brevard & husband David, grandchildren Brett Brevard & Brandi Brevard, Luke Magilke & great grandchildren Parker Brevard, Maebry, Sawyer & Meric Magilke, all of Austin. Additionally, she will be fondly remembered by a host of nieces & nephews. Also surviving is her “#1 daughter”, Precious, a beloved yorkie & constant companion for the last seven years. Preceding her in death were her parents & husband, Elward, sisters Margaret & Loretta & a special friend of eleven years, Tinker Allbright.
With gratitude, the family appreciates the devoted attention of her several caregivers, including Cheryl, Carlyn & Christina, the caring staff of Angels Care Home Health & the attentive nurses of Angels Care Hospice.
Visitation will be held at Johnsons on Tuesday, 6-8pm. A celebration of Charlotte’s life will take place at Johnson’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 24th at 11am, followed by graveside at Lawnhaven Cemetery. The remembrance service will be conducted by Billy Huffman while family members will offer special memories & serve as pall bearers. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to a police, military, animal rescue or favorite charity.
