Chuck Smith, the youngest of ten siblings, spent his early childhood in Texas before his family moved to Southern California. He lived the remainder of his youth in Sunnymead, California, and graduated from Riverside Polytechnical High School. Chuck received a Bachelor of Science degree from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas (previously known as Abilene Christian College), on a football and track scholarship. It was at ACU he met the love of his life, Patricia Anne Horton. The two were married September 30, 1956 in San Francisco immediately following a football game in Chuck's rookie season with the San Francisco 49ers. Because of football injuries, Chuck and Anne moved back to Texas where Chuck began his career in education. Over the next 36 years, he was given opportunities to positively impact students' lives. He taught math, coached football and track, and led administratively. He was an assistant coach on the 1966 Texas 4-A State Champion San Angelo Central High School Bobcats. He served as Head Coach and Athletic Director for the San Angelo Lake View Chiefs from 1969-1972. Moving to administration, Chuck served as Assistant Principal and Principal at San Angelo's John H. Glenn Junior High School and served as purchasing director for San Angelo ISD until his retirement in 1994.
