Lynn Stephen Richards Jr. was born to Lynn S. and Lucille Covey Richards on September 10, 1926 in San Francisco, California.
Stephen was a fun-loving boy who attended East High School through his junior year when he joined the Navy V-12 program (WWII), attended Occidental College for two years and then entered the University of Iowa Medical School at age 19. After a semester his Bishop/Father called him to serve a mission and he was sent to the Montreal, Canada Mission.
At age 16 he met a beautiful young women, Annette Parkinson Nibley, in his Sunday School class. Thus began a love affair that continued through 71 years. As he prepared to leave on his mission, he asked her to marry him. They corresponded faithfully and upon his return, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple, December 14, 1948. They were inseparable until Annette’s passing in 2008. Steve was only hours away from his 65th wedding anniversary when he passed. He was anxious to be with his sweetheart again.
After their marriage, Steve returned to Iowa to resume medical school. He then interned in Bethesda, MD with the Navy and also served in Norfolk, VA. He went on to specialize in cardiovascular-thoracic surgery at the University of Minnesota. He was involved in the early development of coronary bypass surgery. During these sixteen years, seven children were added to their family.
He returned to Salt Lake City in 1964, joined the Salt Lake Clinic and began 28 years as a surgeon, operating at the LDS Hospital.
Stephen and Annette were proud of their family and enjoyed spending time with them. They loved parties at their home, boating at Lake Powel and Hebgen Lake, off-road four wheeling, tennis, working on cars, and bird watching.
Stephen took great satisfaction in building his log cabin on Hebgen Lake. Each one of the family participated in the project in some way, cutting, peeling and shaping logs and watching the new cabin take shape. Annette put the finishing, homey touches inside. Many wonderful summers were shared with extended family at the lake.
Steve was devoted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following his mission to Montreal, he continued church service in many capacities. He was a branch president, young men’s president, counselor in a stake presidency, high counselor, guide on Temple Square, and temple sealer (Salt Lake Temple). He sealed many of his grandchildren and he took great joy in this opportunity
