Donald Gary Washburn, 82, of Salisbury, MD passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Born May 12, 1935, he was the son of the late Granville Washburn and Thelma Washburn. He is survived by his daughter, Donna; his son, Ralph and wife Jeanine; five grandchildren, Sarah and Lauren Washburn, Charles Self, Ashley Self, Taylor and husband David Weedall; 3 great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Dawson, and Dayson Weedall; and long-time friend, Kim Vallejo. Donald was a highly decorated Chief Warrant Officer 3 in the U.S. Army. He served 2 tours in Vietnam in the 1097th Heavy Boat Unit where he lost many comrades in arms. He also served in the 2/7 Marines, 1st Marine Division in the latter days of the Korean War as a member of the mortar team. Upon his retirement, Don worked as a security officer across several states before retiring from Spence Protective Agency. Don was very passionate about his military career and fellow service members. He started the Chapter 624 of the Vietnam Veterans of America in Salisbury, MD. He was also a past commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 34 as well as a member of the VFW 194. He dedicated many of his retirement years to helping fellow veterans obtain benefits and medical services. As a man of faith, he was a dedicated member of St. Francis de Sales Parish as well as the Catholic War Veterans of America. He enjoyed motorcycles and participated in many Rolling Thunder Rallies in Washington, D.C. He was a life-long supporter of the Baltimore Colts, even though it took 36 years to win another Super Bowl. A Life Well Celebrated Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 11, 2017 Wicomico County, MD. Rev. Christopher LaBarge will officiate.
