John W. Shepherd, Jr. was born June 21, 1916 to Lizzy and John Shepherd in Maysville, Georgia. He passed away July 3, 2012 at the age of 96 in Salem, Oregon. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Gwendoline Shepherd, his wife of 59 years, preceded him in death. Surviving John are his sons, Tom Shepherd, Phoenix, AZ, Jim Shepherd, Arcadia, CA, daughters, Ann Bausch, Salem, OR, and Betty Hillis, Savannah, GA, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
John graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1938 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He began a career in sales and service in St. Louis, Mo. with Thomas A. Edison Corp. He served in the Navy during World War ll, in the Atlantic Theatre, and was sent by the Navy for additional schooling to Bowdain College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He met and married Gwen in Boston, MA. while attending MIT. After the war he resumed his career and was transferred to Birmingham, AL, New Orleans, LA and Houston, TX. In 1958 he moved his family to Atlanta,GA to start his own company, Shepherd Equipment Co. He ran his company until his retirement at the age of 73. He and Gwen enjoyed visiting with family during their retirement years. After the passing of his wife, John moved to Salem, OR to be near family.
Services will be held at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church, Atlanta, GA, August 11, 2012.
