Jack was born on July 6, 1928 in Salem, Oregon into a pioneer family who came to the Willamette Valley in 1852 by way of the Oregon Trail.
He serviced the US Navy during WWII a board an attack troop transport ship in the South Pacific. At the end of the war he was an eye witness to the signing of the Japanese surrender a board the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.
After the war he worked for both the Oregon and U.S. Departments of agriculture retiring in 1993 after 43 years of service.
He served as Exalted Ruler of the Keizer Lodge #2472 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks from 1984-1985 and as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of Oregon North Central District from 1994-1995.
He enjoyed golfing, stamp collecting and traveling; dividing his time between Arizona and Oregon after retirement.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of almost 50 years, Mary Kathryn Hoffman Lutz who passed away in 1998. He is also preceded in death by his son Steve.
Survivors include his second wife, Carol Jean Lutz, sons, Russel and David and his daughter, Susan Smith, his stepson, Douglas Bannick and stepdaughter Christina Dedrickson along with 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
A visitation will be on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 from 10 am – 5:00 pm at Howell, Edwards, Doerksen. A memorial service will be on Saturday April 30, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Keizer Elks Lodge. Private Entombment will be at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.
