Bea was born in 1937 in Connellsville, PA to William and Beatrice Crouse. She graduated of Purdue University and her scientific career started at Parke-Davis working on the measles vaccine. In 1960 she married Earl Epperson. Bea and Earl lived in several locations across the country including Michigan, New Jersey, Arizona, and California before settling in Salem in 1972.
Bea was a scientist, educator, volunteer, author, world traveler, and loving mother and grandmother. She lived in Salem for the past fifty years where she taught physics and chemistry at Jefferson High School and McNary High School. During her time teaching at McNary High School, Bea was awarded the Oregon Teacher of the Year and the United States Presidential Award for teaching which included a trip to Washington D.C to meet the President.
Bea was highly active in several local and state organizations including being a leader in the 1970s campaign to bring public kindergarten to Salem. She was a prominent member of the League of Woman Voters, on the board for many years and moderated numerous candidate debates for Oregon political offices. During her life Bea traveled extensively including trips to six of the seven continents and was a frequent presenter at the Willamette travel club.
Bea is survived by her husband Earl, children Diane (Keith), David and Russell (Kara), and five grandchildren, Ian, Morgan, Riley, Iris and Lillian.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30pm, Friday, August 19th at Chapel of the Gardens, 1350 Commercial St. SE, Salem.
