Susan Rae Kaplan of Charlestown, formerly of Swampscott, entered into rest on October 18 at the age of 72. She was the third of Ralph (of blessed memory) and Harriett Kaplan’s four daughters. In addition to her loving mother Harriett, Susan leaves behind her sisters Anne (Bob) Selby, Roz (Brian) Moore and Judy (Bill) Mishkin. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews Joe (Ari) Selby, Steven (Rachel) Selby, Kate (Dan) Urman, Scott (Anne) Moore, Jaime Moore (of blessed memory), David (Samantha) Mishkin, and Amy (Seth) Johns as well as the next generation of the Kaplan family, including 14 great nieces and nephews. Susan adored spending time with all her relatives, especially at large family gatherings.
Susan spent her childhood in Swampscott, moving to Charlestown as an adult some 40 years ago. She was a gifted classical pianist and attended the University of New Hampshire, majoring in Music and Political Science and graduated with honors as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Her next academic pursuit was Boston University Law School, where she earned her law degree. Susan parlayed her law school education into two areas: family law and medical insurance. On numerous occasions, Susan volunteered her legal expertise pro bono.
Her three siblings lovingly remember their sister as an excellent student, avid reader, articulate speaker and advocate for human rights. In addition to her family, Susan is fondly remembered by special friends Alan, Alex, Ellen, Linda, and Tony. She was also a passionate dog owner. Susan’s dogs were her constant companions, providing her with many years of joy.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at 10am at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will immediately follow at the Temple Israel section of the cemetery on Lowell Street in Peabody.
