Rosalind (Kramer) Stone, 94, of Swampscott, passed peacefully in her home of 65 years, with loving family by her side. Roz is survived by her husband of 73 years, Myron Stone. Devoted mother of Jacob and Linda Stone of Sarasota, FL, Samuel and Donna Stone of Swampscott and Michael and Rosalie Stone of Swampscott. Rosalind grew up in Little Rock, AR, the dear daughter of William and Carolyn (Whitmore) Kramer. She was the loving sister of Charlotte Lou Garber of Marblehead and the late Ruth Grimes.
Roz was a champion swimmer in her high school days back in Arkansas, swimming long distances, relying on her physical and mental fortitude. Roz came to Swampscott in 1946 and met Myron, a WWII Marine Veteran and together they created a marvelously happy family story.
Roz was a stay at home Mom when her boys were young, and then at 35 years old, she enrolled in Salem State Teachers College, went full time for four years, while still raising her family, and earned her degree. Roz taught in the Swampscott school system for 18 years – teaching math at the Machon Elementary School. Her students will tell you she was tough but fair – and if they passed her class they earned a swim in her backyard pool at the end of the school year. The pool being built was a tribute to her love of swimming, but also became a centerpiece for so many wonderful years of family gatherings. During her summers off from teaching school, she would organize swim lessons and in her backyard pool she taught hundreds of young Swampscott children how to swim.
Our family will forever remember her as the loving matriarch, instrumental in the happiness of 3 sons, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was always there with guidance, encouragement and unconditional love.
She was adored and will be profoundly missed by her seven grandchildren – Sara Farbman (Richard) of Brooklyn, Aaron Stone of Somerville, Jill Skalniak of Woburn, Jennilee Stone of Winchester, Bill (Wendy) of Doylestown, PA, Alex (Heather) of Danvers and Harry (Bridget) of Salem. She cherished the time she had with her nine great-grandchildren, Malin, Micah, Nava, Jelani, Robert, Raegan, Sadie, AJ and Emerson. She will be sorely missed by a large extended family of nieces, nephews and their families.
A memorial service for Rosalind will be held on Tuesday, July 20th at 3:00 PM at Temple Emanu-El, 393 Atlantic Avenue, Marblehead, MA 01945. A reception will follow immediately after the service. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Rosalind’s memory to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B102, Danvers, MA 01923 (https://www.caredimensions.org) or to Swampscott Senior Center, 200R Essex Street, Swampscott, MA 01907.
