Richard M. Smith, of Boca Raton, FL, formerly of Swampscott, entered into rest on Wednesday, July 6, 2018. Richard was the beloved husband of Zenaida Smith, with whom he shared 41 years of marriage. He was also the husband of the late Gloria Smith.
Raised in Swampscott, Richard attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. A decorated Air Force Lieutenant in WWII, he served as a bombardier, flying 19 missions over Europe. Back at home, he was an accomplished businessman, acting as president of David Smith Co, a prominent local manufacturer of ladies’ apparel. Richard strongly supported numerous organizations, acting as trustee at Union Hospital and Eastern Bank, and a founding member of Temple Emanu-El of Marblehead.
After moving to Florida, he earned his Master of Arts in History at Florida Atlantic University. After mastering history, he then made history, by becoming the oldest person at the time to achieve a doctorate, achieving his doctoral degree at the University of Miami at the age of 87.
In addition to his dear wife, Zenaida, those left to cherish Richard’s memory are his devoted children: Betsy Anderson, Rande Smith and her husband Rick, and Cathie Skaletsky and her husband Mark; 7 cherished grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his loving brother, Bob and his wife Janice, of Salem, MA.
Funeral services will be private.
