Ethel Schultz

SCHULTZ, Ethel (Levine) – Entered into rest March 22, 2016, at age 89 years. Ethel was a resident of Peabody, and formerly of Salem and Swampscott. Born in Lynn MA, the oldest child of Rose and Max Levine, Ethel graduated from Classical High School and received a BS degree from Simmons College in Boston and, later, an MA degree from Northeastern University. After leaving her work in a chemistry lab at Harvard to start a family with her beloved husband Bernard (Bernie) Schultz, she returned to work, first as a math/science teacher at Shaw Junior High School in Swampscott and then as chemistry teacher and chair of the Science Department at Marblehead High School. In the early 1980’s, Ethel received a national award from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation for excellence in high-school science teaching. Ethel left teaching later in the 1980’s to accept positions as science-education grant administrator first for the National Science Foundation in Washington DC (she was the first high-school teacher ever chosen by the NSF to do this work), and then for the private Noyce Foundation. Among Ethel’s many avocations throughout her long fruitful life was as docent at the Peabody Essex Museum.

Ethel was predeceased by her husband Bernie. She was the devoted mother of Mark Schultz and his wife Suzanne of Williston VT, Howard Schultz and his wife Victoria Winston of Cambridge MA, and Lawrence Schultz of Wakefield MA; the loving sister of Harold Levine and his wife Renee of North Carolina, and Sydney Levine and his wife Judy of New York City; and the cherished grandmother of Matthew, Margaret, Alexander, Benjamin, and Carter.

Services at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, SALEM on Friday, March 25, 2016 at 12 noon. Interment at Congregation Shirat Hayam Cemetery, Beth El Section, Peabody. Memorial Observance following the interment on Friday at Temple Tiferet Shalom, 489 Lowell Street, Peabody until 4:15 PM.
