Big Marty was born on March 9, 1953, to Don Grant and Thelma Grant in Princeton, Indiana. After graduating from Murray High School in Utah, she went on to attend the University of Utah where she would fall in love with being an educator and meet her loving husband, Dale Pehrson, AKA Daler, who she was married to for 51 years.
After graduating from Utah, she and Dale went overseas to teach and travel the world before returning to their hometown of Murray, Utah, where Dale would start his football coaching career and Marty would continue her teaching career as an English teacher that would span 38 years and affect countless lives. Her passion for teaching and helping people learn and develop as young adults was noticed by all around her with her special glow and touch, and shared daily with her children when they used the word “good” instead of “well” in a sentence.
Big Marty and her husband Dale would have two children. Their oldest daughter, Jaci Spooner (43), who is a hair stylist, in a family with little hair, and their youngest and very handsome son, Preston Pehrson (40), who is a coach like his father.
Big Marty also has a son-in-law, Josh Spooner (53), and a daughter-in-law, Kim Pehrson (38), as well as two grandchildren, Austin Pehrson and Tuff Pehrson that know her as “Mai”. Big Marty poured into her grandchildren every chance she had and she loved them more than anything. She was known for sneaking candy and treats to both without their parents knowing and being sure they were always happy and enjoying the time they had with her.
In 2014, Big Marty retired from teaching and spent her time enjoying football games, her crazy kids’ lives, being around her grandchildren, and time with her husband. When he retired in 2018, she and her husband would move to Ponte Vedra, Florida, to start their next chapter of life and enjoy walks, relaxing at the pool, and watching college football during the season with her family outside. She also created a strong love for Moscow Mules and her sister Kerri’s Sangria.
Big Marty, was predeceased by Don and Thelma Grant (Parents), and Larry Grant (Brother). She is survived by her loving husband, children, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, grandpups, and her sisters Kerri Miller, Kelly Noel, and Linda Barmore.
