Frank F. Bates, Sr., 89, of Ferguson, MO passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 18, 2016. He is preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Mary (nee Conway) Bates; his wife, Edith; daughter, Etta Conaway; and 8 siblings. Frank is survived by his children, Frank (Melba) Bates, Dorothy Bates, Austin (Brenda) Bates, Mary Bates, Rosemary (Lawrence) Jett, Glenn Bates, Mark Bates, and Laura Sisak; many grandchildren, great grandchildren; and a brother, Marmie Bates. Dearest uncle, cousin, and friend of many.
Frank was a proud US Navy Veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of the Word of Life Apostolic Church and a 33rd Degree Mason. He loved bluegrass and Southern gospel music and was an accomplished guitar, mandolin, and violin player. Frank retired as a machinist with McDonnell-Douglas and never met a stranger. He would chat with the staff and the patients at the VA Hospital for hours. He enjoyed spreading love and joy and his good-hearted spirit will be missed.
Friends may visit on Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 4-8 p.m. at Alexander-White-Mullen Funeral Home in St. Ann, MO. Service is on Friday, June 24, 2016 at noon. Interment will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Expressions of condolence may be offered at www.alexanderstlouis.com.
