Michael Hayward

After receiving bachelor and graduate degrees from New York University in Classical Studies, he taught Latin and English at both the high school and university levels. Changing his name to Michael Hayward, he became a news commentator at a time when ethnic surnames were an impediment to media careers.

Michael covered the opening of the United Nations for WNYC, and fell in love with the ideals of an institution dedicated to world peace. When the station ended daily coverage of events at the UN, Michael opted to stay there and, as a producer of radio, television and film, worked his way up to Deputy Director, United Nations Radio & Visual Services.

In their early twenties, Michael telephoned Mildred Feingold and offered to fill in when her blind date cancelled. They "fell in love at first sound,” and remained deeply in love for over 75 years, her death occurring shortly before their 73rd wedding anniversary.

Upon retirement, the couple moved to Vancouver, where Michael directed the Canadian project Vision Habitat. And, upon second retirement, they moved to Sacramento.

Michael remained active in the community, serving as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Albert Einstein Center, Chair of the Board of Directors for Access Sacramento, President of the Campus Commons Park Corp., Vice-Chair of the United Way Government Relations Committee, Trustee for the World Affairs Council, and member of the KVIE-TV Community Advisory Board, the United Nations Association Board, and the Trust Fund for the Jewish Elderly Board.

Nevertheless, Michael’s proudest achievement was co-founding the Kashenberg-Ostrow-Hayward Library & Cultural Center (KOH), located on the campus of Mosaic Law Congregation. KOH is a resource for books and DVD’s and has a full schedule of programs, presentations, classes, film showings, art displays, and much more.

Michael is survived by daughter Susan, son Fred, grandsons Jason and Jack, great grandchildren Jakob and Chloe, and several more with ties so close that they are considered family.
