Lloyd Horace McGuire, Jr. was born in Oklahoma City to Lloyd, Sr. and Elizabeth (Buckeridge) McGuire on January 8, 1932. His early years were spent in Guthrie, OK before moving to Tulsa for high school.
He served as a Sergeant in the 2nd Infantry Division of the US Army (1951-53) during the Korean War. He was wounded in action and received the purple heart. In 1953 he married Mary Jo Hunt of Tulsa. Lloyd earned a BA degree in History from the University of New Mexico (1956) and a master’s degree in History from the University of Kansas (1960).
In addition to being a devoted family man, Lloyd’s passions were teaching and running, later race walking. He always loved teaching and coaching, and cared a great deal for about each of his students.
Lloyd taught Political Science in Shawnee Mission High School District in Kansas City (1956 - 1968). During this time, he received the Outstanding Young Teacher award in 1965 and coached his cross-county team to 2nd in State in 1966. In 1968, the family moved to California where he continued his teaching career at El Capitan High School in the Grossmont High School District (1970 - 1989).
As a member of the San Diego track club from age 37 - 60, he ran many events from 800 meters up to marathons. He switched to 5K race-walking in his 60’s and continued until age 80. He enjoyed a busy retirement which included much traveling and the research and writing of the 1998 book, “Birth of Guthrie,” a history of the Oklahoma land rush of 1889 and the early years of Guthrie.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Jo, 3 children (Jeff, Mary Lynn, and Robert), 9 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Lloyd is fortunate to have lived a long and rewarding life and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
