Mary Johnson Funsten, age 96, passed away peacefully at home on October 14, 2020, was born on January 2, 1924 to William Byers and Mabel Davis Johnson of Ada, Oklahoma. She was married to James (Jim) Bowen Funsten, III. on April 6, 1946 and was preceded in death by Jim in 1987 and her son William (Bill) Byers Funsten in 2019. Mary was a member of Roswell United Methodist Church and the Seekers Sunday School in Roswell, Georgia where she lived at the time of her death.
Mary was known for her strong Christian faith and her love of God. She was a graduate of Oklahoma Agriculture and Mechanical College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Throughout her life, she was a teacher, seamstress, nurse, scout leader and gardener. Her favorite hobbies were sewing, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She and Jim opened their home to care for foster children after many of the children were grown and living on their own. At the age of 55 she enrolled at Crawford W. Long School of Nursing to become a registered nurse and worked in the newborn nursery at North Fulton Hospital until the age of 72. After retirement, she volunteered her time at the North Fulton Community Charities.
Mary is survived by seven of her eight children and their spouses, James B. and Mary Funsten, IV, Ellen and Greg Lundy, Cheryl G. Funsten (Bill’s wife), Marigene Horn, Roland and Jan Funsten, Laura and John Bayles, Michele Foulk, Stephen Funsten; 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at Roswell Funeral Home Wednesday, October 21, 2020 for her immediate family members. She will be buried next to her husband, James B. Funsten, III, at Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell, GA.
