Mr. George Lyle "Tommy" Thompson, 83, of Columbus, GA, passed away on August 27, 2011 in Roswell, GA. He retired from the U. S. Army after 22 1/2 years of service achieving the rank of Command Sgt. Major. He was a member of both the Dixie Seniors and the Valley Seniors Golf Associations. Preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Martha Thompson of Baileyton; a brother, Rush Thompson of Baileyton, and two sisters, Mary Thompson Munsey and Grace Thompson, both of Greeneville. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joy Thompson; daughters- Debbie (Edward) Szczepanski and Cathy Thompson; sons- Gary (Choe) Funk and Russell (Sue) Funk; sister - Frances Malone; 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews - Danny and Patricia (Thompson) McLain, Lanny and Susie (Thompson) Jones, all from Baileyton,Carl and Gail (Malone) Outhouse of Greeneville, Frank and Paige (Malone) Mengel of Greeneville, Shane Malone of Swedesboro, NJ. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Drs. William Macheski and Banks Carroll along with their staffs for their many years of loving care. They would also like to thank the entire staff at Columbus Hospice and the Hospice House for their tender and compassionate care. Donations can be made to Columbus Hospice in his memory. Visitation will be from 10:30 A.M. until 11:00 A.M., and the Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, September 1, 2011 both at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Rd., Roswell, GA 30076.
