Alma Larach May peacefully joined the Lord on Monday, May 27, 2024. She was 97 years old. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Pablo and Mary Larach, her brother Paul, and her sister Gloria.
Our mom was born on October 1, 1926, in New Orleans, LA and spent her early years in San Pedro Sula, Honduras; because her parents wanted her to be educated in the United States, they sent her to Saint Elizabeth Academy for high school and Georgian Court College both in New Jersey. She met George May (Pop) on a blind date, and they married a year later in 1953. They then moved to Atlanta, GA where she raised three children.
During the 1970s, Mom served as the Honorary Consul of Honduras where she helped to develop trade between the country and the state of Georgia and directing aid to Honduras during Hurricane Fifi in 1974. Also, while our Pop was a GA Tech Professor, Mom became an active member of the GA Tech Faulty Women’s Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers, where she served as president in 1972-1973.
Mom was a devout Catholic and a founding member of Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandy Springs, GA. She was active in the church and St. Jude’s school where her children attended; she organized and performed in the church talent shows and was a substitute teacher at the grade school. She had a great sense of humor, and everyone knew our mom as the “cool mom,” especially when she chaperoned the eighth-grade class trip from Atlanta to Washington, DC on the train. Her title as “cool mom” continued with her children and their friends in high school as she chaperoned several trips to Destin, FL. She loved to laugh and had a beautiful smile and a light in her eyes that would brighten any room she entered.
Beginning in the late 1980s, she moved to North Georgia where she began a second career as the English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher for the Pickens County school system until she finally retired to Roswell in 2010.
Mom loved life, she had lots of friends; she enjoyed painting, playing bridge, walking on the beach, making pottery, and most of all, she loved her family - three children, four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She also loved Martina.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Martina, her caregiver, best friend, “the boss” as mom called her while saluting to her, who took loving care of her the last several years of her life. We will be forever grateful.
Alma/Mom/Mimi will be deeply missed by her children Frank May, Mary Beth Fant (Darrell), Will May (Susan), her grandchildren Brian May (Megan), Bill May (Kelly), Blake May (Samantha), Brittany Nelson (Eddie), and her 10 great grandchildren.
To celebrate Mom’s life and honor her contribution to the world a funeral Mass will be held at 10am on June 26, 2024, at Saint Jude the Apostle Church in Sandy Springs, GA.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Alma L. May’s memory would be meaningful. Condolences and memories can be shared at www.roswellfuneralhome.com
Alma’s departure leaves a void in our lives, but she will be forever in our hearts.
Alma will be laid to rest in Green Lawn Cemetery & Mausoleum, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076.
