He was born in Madison, GA on December 10, 1942, son of O.M. and Kathryn Knight Cates. He graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, from North Georgia College in Dahlonega, and received an MD from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He started his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, and following two years of active duty in the US Army, he completed his residency at Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. He practiced medicine in Rome at the Norton Women’s Clinic from 1974 until his retirement. He was a member of the American College of OB/GYN, the South Atlantic Association of OB/GYN, and the Georgia State Society of OB/GYN.
Dr. Cates was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Rome, where he was a deacon, twice serving as chair, taught Sunday School, served on numerous committees, and participated in mission trips. He served on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of NW Georgia for over 30 years and was on the board of the William S. Davies Shelter and the board of Baptist Today/Nurturing Faith news magazine.
Dr. Bob is survived by his wife, Martha Talley Cates, to whom he was married on June 20, 1964, by two sons, Stewart M. Cates (Michelle), Kingwood, TX and Adam W. Cates, Minneapolis, MN, and by grandchildren Caroline, Allison, Stewart Jr, Ella and Tucker. He is also survived by a sister Kay Peterson, Marietta, GA, and a brother John Mark Cates, Charlotte, NC, and nieces and a nephew.
Memorial services were held at 11am, Saturday, December 31, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Rome, with visitation with family following.
