Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Gerrell Andrews Smith.
Paul was a graduate of Berry College in Rome, Georgia. Paul held the office of County Agent for the Floyd County district. Paul has described his position as our County Agent as a job that he would have done even without pay. He loved the people and families he was able to help in this great county. Paul considered Floyd County his home. Paul later served in the office of State Representative for our Floyd County district. In this position, Paul was able to bring much needed funds and support to our district. He was able to fund many great projects such as building the bypass, the new Forum, and improving every road in the city. Paul has spent his life and career in the building and development of Floyd County.
One of Paul’s proudest accomplishments was bringing the Coosa Valley Fair to Floyd County. To honor him, the Coosa Valley Fair has a place of remembrance for him at The Paul E. Smith Livestock Barn. In Paul’s words, this was the highlight of his life and career.
Paul was a quiet, faithful man with a deep love and devotion for the people he met every day. Even in his last days, he continued to wake every morning, anxious to get to work and see what he could accomplish that day. He was deeply loved by everyone who knew him. He will be missed and remembered as a true friend and brother to us all.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Wednesday, December 28, at 1:00pm. The service will be located at Second Avenue Baptist in Rome, Ga. In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions to Second Avenue Baptist Church.
