Jerry Lee Minge, age 88, of Rome, Georgia passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2022. He was born in Rome, Georgia September 23, 1934. He was the son of the late Willie Lee Minge and Mary Elizabeth Moore Minge. He graduated from Darlington School in 1953. He attended The University of Georgia where he graduated with a Bachelors of Business Administration degree, majoring in accounting. He also attended the University of Georgia School Of Law where he earned his Juris Doctorate degree.
Returning to Rome, he practiced law with the late Robert L. Scoggin. In 1962, he joined Gary Hamilton and George Anderson in practice of law under the name Hamilton, Anderson and Minge. In 1965, he was elected to the Georgia Legislature, being re-elected in 1966 and again in 1967 for a two-year term. In 1967, he was appointed by the then Governor Lester Maddox as Judge of the State Court of Floyd County. Upon completing this term, he practiced law in Rome until his retirement in September 2006.
He served as Commander of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, President of the Rome Bar Association, President of the Rome Jaycees, President of the Young Democrats, Member of the Georgia Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.
He was a member of the Rome First United Methodist Church and spent his childhood years in the North Broad Baptist Church.
Mr. Minge was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Lee and Mary Elizabeth Moore Minge and a sister Constance (Connie) Brooks.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Kate Massey Minge whom he married on May 5, 2001. Three daughters: Mary Angela Minge, of Athens Georgia, Jennifer Bland Minge, of Athens Georgia and Anne Marguerite Minge Poe (Kevin) of Jefferson, Georgia. Three stepsons, John Steven Massey, of Coker Creek Tennessee, David Eugene Massey, Columbia South Carolina and Andrew Leslie Massey, of Newnan Georgia. Three grandchildren: Carol Malone (Jacob) of Louisville Colorado, Christopher Poe (Caitlin), of Raleigh North Carolina and Sarah Taliaferro (John), of Raleigh North Carolina. Four great-grandchildren Meredith Malone, Poppy Poe, Bryce Taliaferro and Colin Poe. Seven step-grandchildren, Wes Massey, Katherine Vance, Amanda Massey, Ryan Massey, John Andrew Massey, Riley Massey and John Dalton Massey.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday November 7th, 2022 at the North Broad Baptist Church, located at 1309 Broad Street, Rome, Georgia 30161 at 12 noon with Mr. Christopher Poe, Mr. Jerry Dunwoody, Rev. Dr. Robert Brown and Rev. Sanford Deberry officiating. Visitation will be held at the church also on Monday November 7th, 2022 from 10:30 in the morning until the service hour.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rome First United Methodist Church, North Broad Baptist Church, or to the charity of choice.
