Mr. Horace A. Stewart, Jr. age 82 of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023. He was born on May 2, 1941 in Rome Georgia. He was the son of the late Horace A. Stewart, Sr., and Grace Bell Stewart.
Mr. Stewart is preceded in death by his parents, son John Gardner, and daughter Mary Teresa.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Meredith Stewart; daughter Callen Hall (Jeff) of Atlanta; Granddaughters Samantha Black (Jacob) of Newnan; Megan Wooten of Newnan; and Alex Minix of Newnan; and Great Grandson Maverick L. Black of Newnan.
Horace was born and raised in Rome and attended North Broad Baptist Church. He attended Fourth Ward School, West Rome High School, and Darlington before graduating from Shorter College in 1964, He began his pastoral career preaching at Unity Baptist Church in Gore. Horace graduated from Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky where he served as pastor of Corinth Baptist Church in Corinth, Kentucky. After graduation, he and his family returned to Rome, where he served as Pastor at Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church from 1967-73. He also served as a Counselor for the Rome Alcoholics Clinic and often served as chaplain to patients at Batter Hospital (now Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital). He served as pastor of the West Fairburn Baptist Church from 1973-75. Horace then served as Chaplain for the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, Palmetto Campus. He became the Director of Counseling for the Children’s Home and Family Ministries and also served as the Clinical Director of Phoenix Drug Treatment Center. In 2001, he retired from the Children’s Home and served as the Minister for Pastoral Care at First Christian Church in Rome. Horace retired from First Christian in 2013.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Horace A Stewart will be held at North Broad Baptist Church in Rome, Georgia on August 8, 2023 at 2pm.
