Dan was born in Columbus, Georgia in 1946 to Mary Frances Daniell Colwell and Gordon H. Colwell, Jr. A veteran of the US Army, where he held the rank of Captain, Dan received his undergraduate degree from the Auburn University School of Engineering and his MBA from the University of Alabama. Despite the latter, his allegiance was forever and always to the Auburn Tigers. WDE!
Dan had many professional and personal gifts, leading him to careers that included being Materials Manager at Redmond Regional Medical Center and owning his own construction company (Heritage Construction), and finally, to completing his career with Aflac.
Dan loved his family; he supported them without fail and always put them first. In addition to spending time with his family, Dan enjoyed visiting with his friends, loved fishing and golfing, and was well known above all else for his infamous baby back ribs. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Rome.
Dan is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marsha (Baxter) Colwell; daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Colwell; son, Joseph Marshall Colwell and daughter-in-law, Taylor Clark Colwell; grandchildren Sophia Grace Colwell and Gordon Clark Colwell; sister, Rebecca Colwell Davis and brother-in-law, Ron Davis; niece, Miranda Davis.
Dan will be remembered by all who knew him for his ever-present kindness and his loving and gentle spirit. He possessed an inquisitive nature that was driven by a desire to make others feel at ease and to genuinely know them better. No matter what he was going through, Dan never complained and never lost his keen sense of humor, bringing joy and laughter to all he encountered even in his most difficult moments.
A private graveside service will be held at noon on Thursday, May 20, with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Rome, with Dr. Joel Snider and Rev. Bill Davies officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family outside in front of the church after the service.
Memorial gifts may be made to the First Baptist Church of Rome Foundation at fbcrome.org or by mailing a check to 100 East 4th Ave., Rome, GA 30161.
