Jewell Duncan, 92, of Bentonville, Arkansas, left this world peacefully on September 28, 2024. Born Bedie Jewell Duncan on July 31, 1932, in Fallsville, Arkansas, to Henry Boling and Maggie (Hatcher), she illuminated the lives of all who knew her.
Jewell’s life was full of remarkable achievements, beginning with her role as one of the first employees of what would become Walmart. Back when it was Walton’s Five and Dime, she played a pivotal role in guiding the early accounting department through Walmart’s formative years. Alongside her husband, Joseph Clyde Duncan, Jewell owned and operated several successful businesses in Northwest Arkansas. But beyond her accomplishments, she was known for her unparalleled generosity, wisdom, and a heart that seemed to have room for everyone.
Jewell had a special way of making people feel loved and seen. Her business, located near the Benton County Fairgrounds, became a haven for children on hot summer days. Entire classrooms on field trips would stop by to cool off, and Jewell, always thinking of others, would hand out candy and drinks with a smile, treating each child like they were the most important person in the room. Whether it was giving gas to someone in need or quietly offering money to those struggling, she never hesitated to show kindness to everyone, no matter their background.
Her wisdom was profound, yet often shared in the most unassuming ways. Jewell’s deep soul and thoughtful nature left an indelible mark on the lives she touched, offering comfort, insight, and love whenever it was needed.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Clyde Duncan, and they will now be laid to rest together at Fayetteville National Cemetery on Tuesday, October 8th, at 11:30 AM.
Jewell is survived by her children, Cheryl Duncan (married to Ron Grobmeier) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Joseph David Duncan (married to Sidney Anita Duncan) of Rogers, Arkansas; her grandsons, Marshal Duncan and Joshua Duncan (married to Hope Duncan); and her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Duncan and Benjamin Duncan.
