My cousin Joe; so many memories of growing up with him and his brothers on the many occasions we got together.  Always a good time to see him at Christmas when my family would travel to his home and enjoy the family company.  I somehow  suspected Joe would end up in law enforcement by the way he would interact with my red headed younger brother...it was a sight to see these two engaged in mayhem and strategic confrontations as pre-teens. The stage was set for Joe to accomplish many admirable things in his career and service to the community and his devotion to family.  I was not aware of all of his many accomplishments and honors and as I read of them, my heart swelled with pride.  What an incredible career.  His dry wit and sly smile will stay in my memories of him always.  With sincere admiration and respect, rest well cousin.  

Joe was my first SWAT commander. Throughout my time with FHP, I had the good fortune to engage with him in a variety of settings. He was always supportive, professional, and kind. Rest in peace warrior. Thank you for so many years of service doing good for others. May God be with and comfort your family.

Joe and I met in 1981 at the FHP Academy when we reported for the recruit class. We have been friends ever since. I was fortunate enough to fish and hunt with Joe when we were in Miami and have wonderful memories out in the Everglades. During his time with FHP, Joe was very passionate about his assignments with the Special Response Team. He was able to be involved with all kinds of special operations including search warrants, barricaded subjects, hostage situations, dignitary protection details and the Miami Riots. Joe was extremely resourceful and responsible with helping put together numerous SWAT schools hosted by FHP.  I was lucky enough to go hunting with Joe last year and go for a ride on our motorcycles. I was also able to take him to lunch a couple of weeks ago and talk about the good times. Great memories that will last forever. Rest in Peace Brother, we will see each other again. Our Friendship was cut short but the Memories will last forever. The rides with the Ravenous Pigs will live forever in my thoughts.

I had the honor to have Captain Schmidt as not only my District Commander but also as my Special Response Team (SRT) Commander for many years. I had the greater honor to have him as a Friend. Here’s to all the days we were “Ten 8”, to all the SRT missions, and all the toasts and laughs by the campfire at the TM Ranch!!

So very sorry to hear this.  Always grateful for the help and guidance he provided to Troop 321 when I was there.  May his memory be a blessing to all whose paths he crossed.

I was fortunate enough to be able to work with Joe when he was assigned to Troop E.  A nice guy, very motivated, and was never afraid to take the point.  He led by example and was an inspiration to do better.

Joe was a Great Guy I wish peace to his family.

I had the pleasure of working with Joe as a peer. He was a great person and his quick wit and sense of humor will undoubtedly be missed.  Truly a sad day for all.  My condolences to his family and friends during this period of bereavement.  Sending thoughts and prayers.

Joe was an example of a great leader. He helped me when a was a new Trooper in Miami.   Joe backed me up and encouraged me. He had a fantastic sense of humor that made the stress of the job easier.  When the leadership was questioned, it was Joe who stood up to them and represented the other Troopers.  He was always right in the stance he took and responsibility he accepted. I believe that was what made him an outstanding man and commander.

I have so many great memories of the Captain. He was my first FHP captain and treated me with great respect and dignity. He always called me by my first name and always had time to sit down and talk. He was my SWAT Commander where he  did such a tremendous job. The citizens of Florida were truly blessed to have a man such as he protecting them. I learned so much from him and hope I can honor his life through my actions.  He was a good man and a great American. Semper Fi brother you will be missed by me.
