“This time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteousness judge shall give me at that day…” 2 Timothy 4:6-8
Audrey Johnson Curtis, daughter of the late Effie Johnson Leonard (nee Jones) and the late James Johnson, was born in Trenton, NJ on March 9, 1941. Audrey completed her high school education and graduated from Trenton Central High School in Trenton, NJ. She had fond memories of growing up in the tight knit community of Lincoln Homes and continued to remain connected to her fellow residents throughout the years. She was also a member of Union Baptist Church in Trenton, NJ since childhood and had been an active member of the Ladies Guild.
After Audrey graduated from high school, she completed a nursing assistant program and obtained a nursing technician position at North Princeton Developmental Center in Skillman, NJ and soon became a Supervisor. Little did she know that she would meet her future husband while working at the facility. Audrey was united in holy matrimony to William Curtis (affectionately known as “Curtis” and “Buster”) and to this union a daughter, Sonya, was born. Audrey and Curtis resided in Ewing, NJ for over 40 years until after retiring and relocating to Viera, FL in 2005. They were married for over 53 years at the time of his passing in 2014.
Audrey left the workforce to devote her time to raising her daughter then returned to working outside the home as a Lunch Monitor at her daughter’s elementary school, Lanning School. She later obtained a position as a Tax Examiner at the New Jersey Department of Labor in Trenton, NJ and retired after 30 years of service. Audrey had a passion for the Arts and played the piano. She loved to coordinate vacations through the Ladies Guild at Union Baptist Church for her family and friends where they travelled to Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Panama Canal. She also enjoyed playing cards and Pokeno with her friends at the Senior One Center and spending time with her family.
On Sunday, August 13, 2023, Audrey departed this life at the age of 82. In her passing, she leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her loving daughter, Sonya Curtis of Rockledge, FL; cousin Joyce Griffin of Viera, FL; cousins Linda Botts and Samuel Walker of Mitchellville, MD; nephews Dwayne Johnson, Darrick Johnson, and Darrin Johnson of Trenton, NJ; preceded her in death, brother Donald Johnson, sister Marion Johnson, brother James Johnson, Jr., sister Mary Agnes Johnson, aunt Bernice West, and cousin Barbara Dula; and many other adoring relatives and friends.
Though the Lord has taken her soul, may we forever cherish her memory.
Sorrowfully submitted,
The Family
