Barbara J. Carter, 64, of Rockford, IL, passed away surrounded by her loving family on July 24, 2022. She was born in Dixon, IL on May 4, 1958 to George and Patsy (Rinard) Onken. Barb married Mark Carter on August 26, 1978 and together they raised 4 children. She worked for over 10 years as a Paralegal for Nancy Mindrup. Barb enjoyed sewing, collecting colored glass, her hurricane lamps, and anything about the Civil War. She was a great cook and was known for her famous, potato salad, homemade hot chocolate, cream puffs, and her special “Yankee Chili”. Barb loved being outside gardening, watching her hummingbirds, and listening to the wind chimes. She was a feisty woman with a great sense of humor that loved her family unconditionally. Barb will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.
Barb is survived by her husband of 43 years, Mark; her children, Jennifer (Nate) Schneider, Jessica Carter, Jillian (Amanda Sloniker) Carter, and Joshua Carter; her grandchildren, Jacob “Jakey” Onken-Carter, who shared her Birthday and was the greatest Birthday gift ever, Aria “Dolly” McCullough, and Alexander “Precious” Carter; her siblings, Vicki Harriet and Kimberly Williams; her aunt, Phyllis Reynolds; and close family friends, Cindy, Jen Jen, and Lisa. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Patsy; her maternal grandparents, Clyde and Edith Rinard; and her sister, Kristi Onken.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the nurses at OSF Hospice and OSF St. Anthony Hospital for all of their compassion and care during this time.
There will not be any services at this time for Barbara, cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Barbara’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Children’s Hospital.
