Richard Louis “Pork” Samek, 94, of Oak Hill, New Brighton, passed away August 24, 2017 while under compassionate care of Good Samaritan Hospice, Beaver. He was born October 9, 1922 in Beaver Falls, son of the late Joseph W. and Mary Margaret (Craft) Samek. Richard proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Ashland. He saw action at Baker Island; and assault landings at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands; Kwajalein, Marshall Islands; Eniwetok, Marshall Islands; Saipan, Mariana Islands; Tinian, Mariana Islands; Leyte, Philippine Islands and Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippine Islands. He received four Bronze Battle Stars, Asiatic Pacific Theater; and two Bronze Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation.
Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home to work. He was always ready to help his father who was a concrete contractor. Richard began a long and rewarding career and retired as an Analyst with Westinghouse after 36 years of service.
He was a member of the New Brighton American Legion Post. For a number of years, he served as a Boy Scout Cub Master while his son Edward was in Scouting. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, now Holy Family Parish, New Brighton. Richard was an avid golfer and often shot below well below his age.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law: Geraldine Samek.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 69 years: Jacqueline (Alexander) Samek; one son and daughter-in-law: Edward and Terry Samek, Cranberry Township; two brothers and a sister-in-law: Norman “Tarz” Samek, New Brighton; Paul “P.J.” (June) Samek, Darlington; one sister and brother-in-law: Catherine (Mir) Psik, New Brighton.
Friends will be received on Monday, August 28, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester (GPS 848 Sunflower Road, adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 29th, at Holy Family Parish, 525 7th Avenue, New Brighton. The public is respectfully asked to arrive directly at the Church on Tuesday morning.
Military Honors will be presented by members of the Beaver County Special Unit at the Church immediately following the Mass. Private entombment will in the Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum.
