He was predeceased by his daughter, Cynthia Yaws; and son, David Van Buren. Richard is survived by his wife of 68 years, Merry Linda Van Buren; his daughter, Linda Davis; son, Rick Van Buren; 11 grandchildren, Tisha Carper, Charles (Jessica ) Davis, Heather Griffin, Shannon Davis Gates, Mark Davis, Shawn Davis, Kimberlyn Gill, Amber Lesovoy, Keeley Davis, Eric Van Buren, and Christopher Van Buren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Richard proudly served in the United States Air Force. He enlisted at the age of 17 in 1951, and proudly retired after 23 years, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. During his time in the Air Force, he was stationed at many different bases all over the country as well as overseas, including Germany, the Philippines, and Guam. He was responsible for overseeing the maintenance of several different aircraft throughout his career, and was most proud of the fact that the aircraft under his supervision were always well maintained and safe for their crews. He received two commendation medals during his career, each for 105 consecutive on-time takeoffs. Moving from base to base was not always easy for Richard and Merry, but they made several lifelong friends and learned a great deal from the people and places along the way of their travels.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthur T. Meehan American Legion Post 1343, PO Box 56, Savannah, NY 13146.
