Maury was the son of Rev. John and Mary (Alden) Potter and was born in Troopsburg, New York on September 27, 1939. He graduated from Mt Ayr High School in Mt Ayr, Iowa in 1957. Maury earned a bachelor’s degree in pastoral studies at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He began his career in Printing. Maury and Pat met at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago when they taught Sunday School. The couple later moved to Royal Oak, Michigan. Maury continued his printing career while attending Wayne State University at night where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He went on to earn his Juris Doctorate in law from Detroit College of Law (now Michigan State University College of Law School).
Maury was an active member of Gideons International and longtime member of Woodside Bible Church in Troy where he loved serving with the Special Needs Group at Woodside. He and Pat taught Sunday School for many years. Maury treasured his faith in Jesus, reading through the Bible every year. He enjoyed Bible study and the fellowship of the Faithful Friends class at Woodside. He also enjoyed card games with friends, and anything that had to do with computers. He especially enjoyed golf with his friends.
Maury is survived by his wife Pat; sons Mark Potter of Menlo Park, California; Larry (Erica) Potter of Columbus, Ohio; Jim (Joanna) Potter of Greenville, South Carolina. Also, 11 grandchildren – Benjamin (Jennifer) , David, Daniel , Paul , Julie , Melody, Joseph, Clara, Elaina, Danielle, and Austin (Jennifer); and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Gwen; siblings Philip Potter, and Becky (David) Bell, nieces Jenny (Shane) Ellison and Melissa (Michael) Pfohl, and nephews Nathan Bell and Michael (Cassie) Potter. Maury was predeceased by his parents, siblings Royce Potter and Ruth Alice Potter, and Mary Lee who died in infancy; and sister-in law Linda Potter.
Maury’s family will welcome all to a memorial visitation on Thursday October 24, 2024 from 10am until the time of the memorial service at 11:30am at Woodside Bible Church, located at 6600 Rochester Road in Troy, Michigan.
