Raleigh graduated from Northfork High School in West Virginia, holding several jobs after graduation before finding himself at Bluefield Telegraph. From Bluefield Telegraph, Raleigh transferred his professional skills to a new career at the Roanoke Times, located in Roanoke, VA, in 1962. Raleigh retired from the Roanoke Times in 1991.
In his free time, Raleigh enjoyed spending hours on the computer, mostly playing Solitaire.
Preceding Raleigh in death are his wife of 63 years, Bonnie Compton; his father, Raleigh Compton; his mother, Charlotte “Lottie” Compton; and his brother, Wayne Compton.
Raleigh is survived by his brother, Randy Compton (Cynthia); his two sons, Jerry Compton (Donna) and Aric Compton; and his daughter, Kim Suter. Raleigh also leaves behind four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on December 27th, 2024 at 10am at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, located at 5731 Airport Rd. NW, Roanoke, VA 24012, followed by a funeral service and entombment at the mausoleum at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at 12:00pm.
