After serving his country for 26 years in the Army with many awards and accommodation he retired to a life of travel, and camping with his beloved wife Lottie. After losing his love to cancer he got married to Hilda where they continued to travel and love life.
Alfred is preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years Lieselotte Robers; his parents; Joseph Robers and Bertha Schraufnagel; and son, Andy Robers.
Those left behind to mourn his loss are his wife Hilda; son, Jim (Cathy) Robers and daughter, Sandy Chitwood (Mike); his grandchildren, Joshua Robers, Amanda Robers and Jacob Robers, Archer Jones, Carson Chitwood; and great granddaughter, Gracie Robers.
Alfred was born in 1935 and raised on Long Island, New York. Attending Uniondale public school and Hempstead high school. After completing a course of instruction leading to a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Hofstra University, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1956.
Finding a natural desire to make the military a career, he retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. With service spanning over 25 years his assignments included command at platoon, company, and battalion level tank and armored cavalry recon units. He has held various staff assignments at organizational, divisional, and post level in the United States, Federal Republic of Germany, Korea, and the Republic of Vietnam.
While teaching the Reserve Officers Training Corps at San Houston University, he completed the requirements necessary to receive a Master of Business Administration degree. Significant military schooling consists of the Armor Officer basic and advanced courses, nuclear weapons employment Officer’s course, Individual college of the Armed Forces, National security management course, and Intelligence Staff Officer course.
Among his awards and decorations are the Legion of Merit, Army Commendation medal, and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
Alfred will always be loved and dearly missed.
A visitation for Alfred will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5731 Airport rd NW. Roanoke, VA 24012, on December 30th, 2024 at 11am, followed by a memorial service at 1pm.
