Born on March 11, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Gordon was the son of Gordon Bertrand Godfrey and Virginia Judith Black. Gordon was raised in Salt Lake City alongside his parents, three brothers, and two sisters. His family spent a brief time living in Elko, Nevada, during his 7th grade year due to his father’s work before returning to Salt Lake City.
After graduating from South High School, he served with the National Guard and received an honorable discharge. Gordon married his sweetheart, LaRita Kay Troescher on December 30, 1969, and their family was sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on April 22, 1988. He is preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his beloved wife, LaRita; his children: Brett Lee Godfrey (and BFF Erin), Matt William Godfrey (and Danielle), and Alicia Kay Shubin (and Chad); as well as six cherished grandchildren: Justin, Jocelyn, Chloe, Quincy, Kenzie, and Jovian.
A man of extraordinary kindness, love, and generosity, Gordon had a remarkable gift for making friends wherever he went. He had an intense love for music and spent much of his time listening to his “Oldies” and burning CDs for his family and friends. He also had a passion for photography, capturing images of animals and nature. The great outdoors, especially camping in the mountains, brought him immense joy. Gordon’s empathy and willingness to help others were evident throughout his life, no matter where he was at or what he was doing. He served openly and in secret, always wanting to take care of people’s physical needs. He considered everyone a friend, taking pictures with complete strangers simply because he admired something they had or what they were doing. Gordon also believed in giving tips to everyone, including his hospice team in his last days; demonstrating his belief in spreading kindness and appreciation wherever he went.
Gordon had a fulfilling career as a draftsman and illustrator, working for MOOG Aircraft (formerly Raytheon Aircraft & E-Systems) from 1971 to 2000, and later at GE Medical Systems until his retirement in 2014. After retirement Gordon was a Bus Driver for one school year.
As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon served in various capacities, including 1st Counselor in the Bishopric, Elders Quorum President, Ward Missionary, Temple Worker and Ministering. He was deeply committed to his church callings. Loving and serving others, following the example of Jesus Christ, was the foundation of his life.
The family extends profound gratitude to Hospice for Utah for their exceptional care. Special thanks to his nurse, Sara, and his aide, Archie, whose compassion and dedication made Gordon’s final days more comfortable.
