A final farewell of fair winds and following seas for Captain C.M. (Mike) Maskell, Civil Engineer Corps, U. S. Navy (Retired). Mike passed away from Parkinson’s disease on September 30, 2015, surrounded by his wife and children.
The oldest of eight, he was born October 27, 1938, in Baltimore, MD. Mike graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute high school in 1956. He attended the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree and was commissioned an Ensign in 1960. He subsequently earned a Masters of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and attended the Harvard University School of Business.
Mike and his wife, the former Patricia Ann O’Sullivan of Baltimore, were married in 1960. Throughout his 30-year naval career, Mike’s family willingly followed him around the world to various duty stations, moving over 18 times. He retired as a Captain in 1990. His personal decorations included numerous awards of the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and Navy Commendation Medal.
After retirement from the Navy, Mike and Pat moved to New Jersey where he worked for a world leading construction group. He also consulted in the construction of the Marine Corps Heritage Museum at Quantico, a homeless shelter in Morristown, NJ, and various projects in the city of Lake Elsinore, CA. In 1999, Mike and Pat moved to Southern California where they both enjoyed the benefits of full retirement.
Mike is predeceased by his parents, Charles Leo and Dorothy Maskell, and his sister, Charlotte Keegan.
He is survived by his wife, Pat, and their four children and their families: Captain Dawn Maskell, U. S. Navy (Retired); Shawn Maskell (wife Pamela; sons Tyler and Brendan); Shannon Murphy (husband Patrick Murphy; children Colleen, Brandon and Molly); and Erin Rea (husband Scott Rea; daughter Abby). He is also survived by his six brothers and sisters: Kathy Hook, Mary Ciampa, Larry Maskell, Tommy Maskell, Raymond Maskell and Charles Maskell.
Mike will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a dedicated and admired father, brother, son, friend and military leader.
The Memorial service for Mike will be held at the Altavita Chapel (formerly Air Force Village West)
