June Fox Mitchell died peacefully in her home on May 12, 2023, where for the last several years she was assisted by her daughter Joan and son-in-law Jimmy Caden. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mabel Majure and Erbin E. Fox, her husband of 60 years, Milton Harper Mitchell, her twin sister, Jean Fox Hightower, her sister, Frances Fox McMullan Blackwell, and her precious youngest daughter, Anne Mitchell Peters. She and Milton were married in Philadelphia, MS on January 20, 1950.
She is survived by daughters Marsha Mitchell Brockman (Bill) of Ridgeland, MS, and Joan Fox Mitchell Caden (Jimmy) of Brandon, MS, her son-in-law Mike Peters, grandson Mitch Peters (Ceejaye) and daughters Anna Mitchell, Elizabeth and Eleanor, her grandson Sam Peters (Courtney) and children, Savannah, Marshall, and Milton, and her step-grandson, James Caden.
June was born April 30, 1924 in Pontotoc, MS but spent most of her childhood in Philadelphia, MS. She was a graduate of Mississippi State College for Women (now MUW), and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She possessed an unbelievable memory and was a voracious reader of Kindle books through the end of her life. June was a trusted confidant for her children and friends and never met a stranger.
June and Milton traveled together to every state in the Country. They loved attending Mitch and Sam’s basketball and soccer games. She was a lifelong participant at the Neshoba County Fair and enjoyed having her family and seeing friends, new and old, from the front porch of the Fox Den. She was a frequent visitor to Perdido Key, FL. She loved telling stories of her experiences in her long life with incredible detail and accuracy. June could keep a baseball box score. She was a lifelong Mississippi State fan, particularly the baseball team, and attended the College World Series in the era of Polk, Palmeiro and Clark. She was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan, and knew most of the players names, having followed several from their time in Jackson. At 87 years young she attended the jersey retirement of manager Bobby Cox via television broadcast at a sports bar on Perdido Key, FL.
A service will be held for June at Parkway Chapel on Sunday, May 21, 2023 with visitation at 10:30, followed by service at 11:00. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to the French Camp Academy at 1 Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745-9989, The Mind Center, c/o The UMMC Fund, Development Accounting, 2500 N. State St, Jackson, MS 39216, or a charity of your choice.
