On March 2, 2024, James Edward Salter Sr., age 88, passed away at his home in Madison. James was born on July 12, 1935, in Purvis, Mississippi. James attended Purvis High School, where he played quarterback for the football team. He later received his degree in education from the University of Southern Mississippi. For almost sixty-six years, James was married to his beloved wife Joan, who preceded him in death. James enjoyed traveling with Joan, tending his vegetable garden, and spending time with his family and friends.
Prior to his retirement, James worked as a long-time employee for the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. James and Joan were active members at Broadmoor Baptist Church, where they joined in 1968 after moving to the area. James served as a Sunday School teacher and a deacon at Broadmoor. James’s life was marked by his great faith, his kindness and encouragement to those he encountered, and his deep love for and commitment to his family and friends.
James is preceded in death by his wife, Joan; his son, Dr. James Salter Jr.; his parents, Victor Eugene Salter and Myrtle Salter Ashburn; and his brother and sister-in-law, Gene Wallace and Peggy Salter.
Left to cherish his legacy and memory are his daughter, Jan Gilbert (Roger); his granddaughter, Lindsey Watkins (Will); his grandson, John Gilbert (Alaina); his great-granddaughter, Avie Grace Watkins; his great-grandson, Wyatt James Gilbert; Steven Holbrook; and many extended family members.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at Broadmoor Baptist Church, 1531 Highland Colony Parkway, Madison, Mississippi. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., with the service to follow at 11 a.m.; burial to follow at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
