James Curtis Bennett

Born at home in Canton, Mississippi to Dorothy Mae (Mott) and Chester James Bennett, and big sister, Edna Ruth. After Curtis’ mother went to heaven in 1953, after living with various family members while his dad worked, his family moved to Venice, California where he met Beth as a senior in high school.

He joined the Marine Corps after graduation in 1959. Two years later he and Beth were married. They were stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA and then transferred to 29 Palms in 1961, where he was honorably discharged as Sgt. E-5 in 1963. But… “Once a Marine, always a Marine.”

He fathered 4 sons with Beth: David Ty (died during birth 8/4/64), Daniel Curtis (9/09/66), David Kyle (6/26/69-3/11/21), and Darren James (9/27/73-7/14/23).

His employment began at Moody Institute of Science in West Los Angeles, which was a subsidiary of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL. It entailed all the necessary steps to complete the catalogs, etc. of their Sermons from Science and Educational films. He also worked at home printing for churches and non-profits.

When the company was to move to Chicago to join the Bible Institute, the decision was made to move to Ukiah which is north of San Francisco and open a printing and advertising business. During 12 years of a growing business the company either had to go bigger or sell. We sold because Curtis wanted to come back to his roots in Mississippi where he continued his expertise in various shops around Jackson until he retired after falling off the back of a truck and breaking his back in 2003. This left him more time to do what he always did: helping others. He couldn’t pass up someone along the road who either had car trouble or at one time, even pulled a lady from a burning vehicle.

God is so good even if we may not understand what He does. But we know, because of His love for us, it will always be the BEST. He went to be with the Lord in peace and is enjoying a happy reunion with his three sons who have gone before him.

A visitation for Curt will be held Friday, November 17, 2023 from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 7469 Old Canton Road, Madison, Mississippi 39110, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM.
