Dorothy Shotts Jones, 90, passed away Sunday, November 8, 2015 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. A graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 11 at Lakewood Memorial Park on Clinton Boulevard. Visitation will take place from 12:00 to 1:30 PM at Parkway Memorial Funeral Home, who is in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy, who was known as "Dot" or "Mimi" to her friends and family, was born on May 12, 1925 in Chipley, Florida to the late Alex C. Shotts, Sr. and Grace Parish Shotts. After the family relocated to Jackson as a young child, Dot often made frequent trips back to Florida to to visit family. Just prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, she met and fell in love with Clifton "Cliff"Jones, a young basketball star at Millsaps College. The two married shortly before Cliff was shipped to the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California. After Cliff returned, they resided in Jackson together for 68 years.
A homemaker all of her life, Dot loved caring for her family and friends. Along with Cliff, Dot was an avid sports fan, and was often found in the stands setting the crowd straight during the 25 years Cliff refereed basketball and baseball games. A doting mother and grandmother, Dot was always heavily involved in school activities, including attending basketball, football, baseball games and track meets near and far.
Dot never lived far away from her immediate family, and was a major influence in their lives. She was a loving caretaker and always made a lasting impression on everyone she met. After the passing of her beloved Cliff, Dot moved to Corinth to live with family. Never one to meet a stranger, she greatly enjoyed the company and hospitality of her new community.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Jones Buffington and husband Jerry of Flora; grandson Kevin Buffington and wife Heather of Corinth; her great-grandchildren Sarah Anne Buffington and Luke Buffington; and her brother, Alex Shotts, Jr. of Jackson. The family would like to thank the wonderful home hospice caregivers of Gentiva Hospice from Booneville, Mississippi, and Memorial contributions may be made to the Gentiva Hospice Foundation.
