On Saturday, January, 28, 2017, God laid to rest William Lloyd Proffitt. Born in Buckingham, Va., March 3, 1929 to William and Lola Proffitt, he was the youngest of four children. He had three sisters, Marjorie Denton, Dorothy Proffitt and Marie Sinclair.
He was the proud graduate of John Marshall High School and Virginia Tech. He was enrolled in ROTC program at both and under his leadership, his companies were awarded high honors. After graduation he proudly served his country as an officer in the U.S. Army in Japan and Korea. He was a proud employee of Virginia Power for 30 years, where he saw it through periods of high growth and technological development.
After his retirement in 1985 the fun began. He and his best friend and life partner enjoyed many years of traveling, playing golf and spoiling grandchildren. Bill was a quiet man and well-respected in all areas of his life. He was an avid woodworker and many of his items are enjoyed in our homes. He loved using his woodworking and handyman skills helping others. He was a proud member of Bon Air Baptist Church, where served as member of the choir, teacher and deacon.
Bill leaves many fond memories with his wife of 63 years, Barbara A. Proffitt; his children and grandchildren, William Barry Proffitt, wife, Beth, children, Alex and Ellie; Susan P. Brightwell, husband, Rick, children, Mary B. Houchins, husband, Justin, Matthew and Jonathan; Bryan Lloyd Proffitt, wife Robin, children, Courtney, Tabitha and Kelsey.
The family will receive friends at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Friday, February 3, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m. Celebration of his life will be held at Bon Air Baptist Church Saturday, February 4, 2017, at 11 a.m., with reception following.
