CRANE, Samuel, Jr., of Richmond, passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Crane; his daughters, Stella Crane Alexander (Darrell) and Libbie Stuart Crane; and five grandchildren, Libbie, Catherine, and Heth Alexander, and Charlie and Harper Cuttino. He was predeceased by his first wife and mother to his children, Libbie Thompson Crane. Born on April 6, 1933 to Samuel Crane and Elizabeth Owen Crane, he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1950. In 1954, he received his B.B.A. from University of Richmond, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha. After college, Sam proudly served as an officer in the U.S. Navy as a navigator on the constellation aircraft. In 1975, he and Ray Shepherd formed Shepherd & Crane, a real estate appraisal firm. Sam enjoyed fishing and boating on the Chesapeake Bay. He was a member of the United States Power Squadron for many years and served as Commander of the Richmond Chapter in 1973. He also taught many navigation classes for the Squadron in the basement of his home. He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia and the Captain’s Golf Group. He also loved to play cards and dance. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 4, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2014 at Hollywood Cemetery,412 S Cherry St, Richmond.
