Roy Gilbert Harrell Jr.

Roy Gilbert Harrell Jr., age 91, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2022. He was born in Fieldale, VA on May 19, 1931 to Gilbert Harrell, Sr. and Bessie Wheeler Harrell. He is preceded by his loving wife, Ann Mays Harrell. In addition, he was preceded by his sisters, Virginia Jarrett, Inis Coleman, Ilene Plybon, Louise James and Faye Curry. His brothers, Graham Harrell, Garland Harrell, David Harrell and William "Billy" Harrell also preceded him. He is survived by his daughter Pamela Dean Harrell, honorary son and daughter Doug and Melonie Payne and special nephews T. Dodd Mays and William S. Mays. Mr. Harrell graduated from Fieldale High School in 1951 where he served as Senior Class President and Editor of his Annual senior year. He as active in sports all his life and played Varsity baseball and basketball through school. He continued to play softball on the church team until the age of 65. He loved supporting local baseball and soccer games and NASCAR racing. Mr. Harrell served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955, during that time he was in combat in Korea and had two World Cruises in 1952 and 1954. He started Harrell Tile Company and after many years he began working at Nationwide Homes in 1974 and retired after 20 years in management. Mr. Harrell was a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and on many committees including buildings and grounds. He was a past member of Phythians. Also he was a member of the Martinsville Exchange Club where he served on the Board of Directors for several years and was also selected as Mr. Mainspring Award in 1977-1978. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Starling Avenue Baptist Church, 932 Starling Avenue, Martinsville, VA 24112 for future projects or Building and Grounds at the church. A Memorial service will be held at Roselawn Cemetery on September 6th at 11 AM with Pastor Dodd Mays officiating. The family will receive friends one half hour prior to the service.
