Robert N. "Rob" Hicks, age 74, of Henrico, VA, passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2024. Known for his boundless curiosity and love of tinkering, Rob had an uncanny ability to find projects, whether around the house or at the family's river retreat on Virginia's Northern Neck. A devoted father, grandfather, and husband, he will be remembered for his quiet, helpful nature and his ever-present willingness to lend a hand.
In his retirement, Rob took great joy in maintaining and improving the river house, which he lovingly purchased and renovated, savoring the peaceful moments spent by the water. His careful, skilled work reflected his lifelong passion for building and creating, always with a keen eye for detail.
As a young man, Rob earned the rank of Eagle Scout, a testament to his dedication to service. Later, he also served his country in the National Guard, where he was stationed at Ft. Gordon Army Base in Augusta, GA. On September 6, 1969, Rob married his high school sweetheart, Denise, beginning a beautiful journey of over 50 years of love and devotion.
Rob's career in telecommunications spanned several decades, beginning in 1971 as a lineman with Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia. Over the years, he worked for various other telecom companies, bringing his expertise to different communication systems and making lasting contributions to his many customers.
Outside of work, Rob found immense happiness in the outdoors, particularly in fishing, which was a lifelong passion. From the old steel Jon boat he purchased in the 1980s and restored, to the Achilles dinghy he recently bought for Presley Creek, fishing was one of his favorite pastimes.
He also had a deep love for his golden retrievers, first Mattie and later Molly, who kept him active with neighborhood walks and endless games of fetch.
Rob is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Denise; his sons, Robert N. Hicks, Jr. and wife, Karen, Brian T. Hicks; his cherished granddaughters, Paige and Norah Hicks; and his brother, Frederick T. Hicks III and wife, Brenda; their children, Lara and Beth; his brother-in-law, Wayne Wood; sister-in-law, Delphine Anderson; and her children, Jenny Nothstine and Sara Anderson.
Rob will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, craftsmanship, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
A celebration of Rob's life will be held on Friday, October 18, at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Rd, Richmond, with visitation from 2 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Henrico Firefighter Foundation in honor of their tireless efforts to save lives in the county.
