Polly Crockett Akers, 84, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Born on November 23, 1940, in Irvington, Virginia, Polly lived a life marked by dedication to her family, her community, and the many people fortunate enough to know her.
For approximately 30 years, Polly served as a bus driver and aide for Henrico County Public Schools. Her work was more than just a job-it was a daily opportunity to care for and connect with generations of students. Beyond her professional role, Polly gave countless hours to the Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad. Over the years, she held various ranking leadership positions within the organization, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to helping others and supporting emergency services in her community.
Polly's life was rich with love and laughter. She is survived by her devoted husband, Don
P. Akers; daughters, Norma J. Ross (Thomas), Becky S. Akers, and Laura L. Walsh (Keith); grandchildren, Kincade Ross (Kayla), Georgia Olivier, Jacob Olivier, Keegan Ross, Adin Adkins, Kruz Ross and Avan Adkins; great-grandchildren, Wilder Ross and McKenna Henkel; brothers, Stanford Crockett and Ned Crockett; and sister-in-law, Shirley Crockett.
She was preceded in death by her father Vincent Crockett and mother Mary Winchester Haynie.
Polly found joy in simple pleasures-camping at Kerr Lake with family and friends was one of her favorite pastimes. She cherished those moments under the stars surrounded by laughter and love. A lifelong lover of words, she enjoyed playing Words With Friends or any word game that challenged her sharp mind and expansive vocabulary. She also loved reading and watching shows like The Voice, American Idol, or Jeopardy-programs that reflected her appreciation for talent and quick wit.
Known for her honesty and humor, Polly had a personality that left an impression wherever she went. When asked how she was doing, she would often reply with a smile: "Old, fat and sassy. God is good and I'm fine." Her sarcasm was legendary among those who knew her best-her primary language-and she never hesitated to speak her mind with candor wrapped in affection.
Polly believed deeply that family extended beyond bloodlines. She embraced people wholeheartedly and made sure they felt it---especially through hugs that were as warm as they were frequent. Her heart had room for everyone she loved.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Mary Dandridge for being not only a faithful caregiver but also a loving friend during Polly's time of need. They also wish to thank Polly's Kerr family for embracing her as one of their own over the years-creating memories filled with joy that will be cherished forever.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Nelsen's Funeral Home located at 4650 S Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231. A viewing will take place at the same location on Thursday, April 24 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and again from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Though Polly's physical presence is no longer with us, the spirit of her laughter, strength, compassion---and yes, sass---will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those who loved her most.
