Marshall E. Hanbury, Sr., 79, of Henrico, Virginia, passed away surrounded by his wife and children on Friday, November 24, 2023, peacefully transitioning to his eternal home with His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Marshall leaves behind a legacy of Christian service, love of family, and professional excellence.
Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, to the late Earl Butler Hanbury and Louise Williams Hanbury. Marshall was very active playing little league baseball, being involved with the Boy Scouts of America, and attending the church where his family was very involved. Broadmoor Baptist Church was like a second home to Marshall; his faith was always the center of his life. Friends remember the impact he had on their lives in junior and high school church youth groups and choirs. He attended Murrah High School in Jackson, and several friends are still in touch with him and his family even through all of his moves and travels.
After high school, Marshall spent two years at Mississippi College and then completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Mississippi. He earned his law degree at Mississippi College School of Law, where he laid the foundation for an esteemed legal career.
He met and fell in love with Alpha Wright during the “summer of love” in 1967. Their enduring love story spanned an exceptional 56 years, characterized by mutual support and shared devotion to their church and community. Throughout the ups and downs of life they shared a love of travel, fine dining, birding, reading, laughter, and the love of their children and grandchildren. Alpha was his rock and support while he pursued his law career. She was always there for him, through good and bad times.
Marshall practiced law in Jackson, Mississippi, while they raised their young children. He then moved his little family to the Washington DC area, where he worked for a congressman from his home state of Mississippi. His path led on to a significant achievement during the Reagan years when he worked for the United States Government as General Counsel of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Making Northern Virginia their home, the family faithfully attended Columbia Baptist Church. There was such a wonderful group of faith filled people who shared their lives at CBC.
Moving his family once again to Chicago, Marshall served as a partner in the prestigious law firm, Mayer Brown. Marshall represented several esteemed clients before his retirement in the early 2000s (right around when the first grandchild was born). Even after retirement, he remained dedicated to law, providing expert consultation and contributing articles to esteemed law journals across the country. Moving to Virginia around that time to be nearer to his grandchild (and subsequent grandchildren), he established a beautiful home with Alpha on a few lovely acres in Goochland County. The whole family made so many wonderful cherished memories in Goochland.
In addition to his devoted wife Alpha, Marshall is survived by their children Jill and Marshall Jr., Jill’s husband, Roger Krais, and the cherished grandchildren Bradford Krais, Arden Hanbury, and Selah Hanbury; his siblings: sister Susan Castle (husband Johnny) of Hendersonville, NC, brother Keith Hanbury (wife Lessa) of Madison, MS, brother-in-law Al Wright (wife Pam) of Gallatin, TN, and brother-in-law Andy Wright (wife Sharon) of Allen, TX. Marshall leaves behind several beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of cherished friends whose lives were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to family and faith.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 4, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home on Parham Rd. A funeral service honoring Marshall’s life will take place on Tuesday, December 5, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the same location. The interment will be held privately for the family at Westhampton Memorial Gardens in Tuckahoe, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association. Also, the family offers special appreciation of Marshall’s doctors and nurses at Henrico Cardiology Associates, as well as huge thanks to Anthology Senior Living at Tuckahoe. The leadership and staff there at Anthology was hugely instrumental in helping Alpha care for Marshall in his later weeks and days on this earth.
