MITCHELL, Floyd Lee, 89, of Richmond, died on February 17, 2010. Born on July 27, 1920, he was the son of the late Nellie Mitchell and George Mitchell. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce Sawyer Mitchell; two daughters, Christi Hatcher and her husband, Glenn, and Eileen Hickenbottom and her husband, Rick; three grandchildren, Lindsey and Matt Hatcher and Mitchell Curry.
Mr. Mitchell graduated from John Marshall High School, where he was a member of E Company of the Corps of Cadets in 1939. During WWII, he joined the U.S. Navy. He attended Richmond Professional Institute and was awarded a B.S. Degree in 1952. In 1962, he was awarded an M.Ed. Degree from the University of Virginia. He then accepted a position with the Henrico County School System, where he taught 6th grade and later served as assistant principal. He was appointed principal of Short Pump Elementary School and later principal of Maybeury Elementary School, where he served for 21 years until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Mitchell was a member of River Road Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, Elder, and a member of the Chancel Choir. He was also a former member of the Short Pump Ruritan Club and The Lions Club.
A memorial service for Mr. Mitchell will be held at River Road Presbyterian Church, 8960 River Road, on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 2 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the River Road Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or to the River Road Presbyterian Church Choir Fund.
