She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Andrew C. “Doc” Taylor, Jr. and her parents, John Robert and Pearl Baldwin Armstrong.
Pearl, named for her mother, was born on a vegetable farm in King & Queen County where she joined her brothers and sisters in the daily chores which included harvesting crops in the late summer from sunup to sunset. The family moved to Richmond near the end of The Great Depression when she was about 12 years old. She always had that farm work ethic and was a proud homemaker and excellent southern, country cook, serving up feasts to family and friends on Sundays, holidays and special occasions throughout her adult life. Pearl was a longtime member of Landmark Baptist Church, where she continued to tithe when she was no longer able to physically attend. She was a devoted wife to “Doc” for 61 years and a doting mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Pearl was loved and cherished by all who knew her.
She is survived by a son, Andrew C. Taylor III (Fran), and daughters, Bonnie Lumpkin (David), and Judy Lewis (Howdy); grandchildren, Bryant Lumpkin (Debbie), Laurie Dameron (Will), Hunter Lewis (Ashley), Whitney Lewis (Matt), and Andrew Taylor. She leaves three great-grandchildren, Madison Dameron, Ryan Dameron and Cormac “Mac” Lewis. Pearl also is survived by her special friend and prayer buddy, Brenda Hobson Storey, who was like family to her.
Thanks go to constant volunteer Fern Freund for being there to provide help whenever needed and to Glen Clark, her friend, confidante and hairstylist, who drove her to and from his shop for hair appointments every Thursday morning for 50 years.
The family will receive friends Monday, July 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 1, at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, VA 23222.
