After numerous marathons, countless 10, 8, and 5K runs and 32 years running the Dallas Turkey Trot, Richard Rose lost his last race with pancreatic cancer Friday morning in his Dallas home. Rick was born October 29, 1944, in Long Beach, CA. to Rollie and Imogene Rose of Moore, Oklahoma; raised in Moore Oklahoma; and, after a living in several other states, found his home in TX in 1978. He is preceded in death by his mother, Imogene M. Rose, and his brother, Christopher A. Rose.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Dorothy Nell Kennington Rose of Dallas, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Laura J. and Toralf Gueldner, of Dresden, Germany and their two boys, Jonas and Noah; daughter and son-in-law Lynda Rose and Major T.B. “Bull” Smith U.S. Army Active currently of Fort Lewis, WA. and their daughters, Tatom P. and (soon to be born) baby girl Smith; step-son Gene W. Carleton Jr. and his wife Annie of North Carolina and son, Christopher and family of CA; step-son Joseph A. Carleton of Albuquerque; step-son James D. Carleton and wife, Lauren of Jacksonville, Fla. and their children, Marina, Mark, and Michael.
He is also survived by his father, Rollie Dodson Rose of Oklahoma City, OK; three sisters: Carol Y. Schmidt and husband, Howard Schmidt, of Moore, OK; Kathy L. Gregory and husband, Jim Gregory, of Moore, OK; Robbie L. Brady of Owasso, OK; three nieces and three nephews.
Richard graduated from Moore High School in 1963. He received an Electrical Engineering Degree from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater. He held two masters degrees: Engineering and Business.
Commissioned as a Naval Aviator in 1968, Rick conducted many combat and peace missions proudly serving our country for 8 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He remained in Active Reserve for seven years, retiring from the Navy in 1989.
His job with Texas Instruments brought him to Dallas in 1978. It was in Dallas where he became a member of the North Texas Toastmasters Club and where he also served a time as the North Texas District Governor.
Upon retirement from TI, Rick put his love of home improvement and power tools to work in his own sub-contracting business. He also enjoyed teaching science to elementary schools with a young scientist program and repairing and restoring antique clocks. An active member of the Town Creek HOA, he loved helping around his community and felt the people in his neighborhood were like family. He especially loved spending time gardening and traveling with his wife, Dorothy.
Loved in life by family, friends and neighbors and known for his highly colorful hats, we will miss his sense of humor, his just-do-it attitude, and his wave as he ran by the houses in Town Creek.
